An African landscape, thousands of kilometres from home.

Found in an Antwerp antique shop, this delicate watercolour depicts a peaceful scene of lush banana plants, tropical trees and a small round hut in the shade. The artist used soft washes of green, ochre and earthy tones, giving the landscape a quiet, almost dreamlike quality.

Time has become part of the image too. The paper has developed a warm patina, adding another layer to a painting that already feels like it has travelled a long way. What was once someone’s treasured memory eventually found itself among forgotten paintings and curious eyes in Antwerp.

There is something rather lovely about discovering a tropical landscape on a rainy afternoon in Belgium. The warmth of the scene and the history of the painting seem to meet in one unexpected place.

When translated into textiles, we kept that same painterly softness. The loose brushstrokes, layered greens and warm earth tones create a calm composition, with the tropical foliage shifting gently as the fabric moves and folds.
