I'm on the stairwell of the famous Hotel Nord Pinus in Arles.
Mexican and Spanish bullfighting posters line the walls, each one transporting me somewhere else. I continue my way to the lavish hotel bar, where Picasso and Hemingway might as well be waiting for a drink.
Somewhere along the road in the South of France, we found this beautiful old Mexican bullfighting poster. It has that wonderful quality old posters often have, where the colours, typography and imagery feel just as interesting today as they must have been when the poster was first made.
There is something about bullfighting posters that makes them feel larger than life. Dramatic imagery, strong compositions and a very particular sense of theatre, all captured on a single sheet of paper.
When translated into textiles, we kept that same theatrical character. The poster becomes a bold composition that moves with the fabric, bringing a little bit of old Mexico, and perhaps a little bit of Arles, along for the ride.
A Mexican bullfight poster, found somewhere in the South of France. Not quite Arles, but close enough for a daydream.
